After reading Doug DeMuro's book, where he owns (and crashes) a Panamera, trades a 550 horsepower wagon for another 550 horsepower wagon, owns a CTS-V sedan, a couple of Range Rovers AND a Nissan Cube and first gen Prius, I couldn't help but think 'Jeez, that's a lot of horsepower' and how old is this guy again?!?
Oh yeah, and now he has a Ferrari.
So, I'm curious how much horsepower you have owned.
Here's my list:
1969 VW Beetle = 50 hp (approx.)
1989 VW Jetta = 105 hp
1988 Toyota Corolla = 74 hp
1995 Honda Del Sol = 102 hp
(Not me and mine was red, but this picture was too perfect to pass up)
2000 BMW 323ci = 170 hp
2005 Scion xB = 103 hp (it was initially rated at 106 but then downgraded!)
2006 BMW 325i =215 hp
Learning to drive, this kid is now 5 years older! I can't believe how much bigger he is!
2005 Bajaj Chetak = 9 hp
2010 MINI Clubman = 118 hp
The stripes actually made it faster.
Total = 946 hp
Average = 105 hp
I feel like this bar is set really low. To be fair, every one of these was a manual (even the Bajaj) and the only one that was no fun to drive was the Corolla. Also, my gas mileage average is WAY more impressive than Doug's. What about you? How much horsepower have you owned?

I've only owned two cars, and between the two of them I've owned 197hp. My current Neon has almost exactly double the power of my first car. See if you can guess what it was.

The Torino's hp was probably more but that's the stock rating for the original engine. Damn I've owned a lot of Fords.

They did when I owned them. Those engines weren't stock. I put the Torino's stock hp because I was a kid and had no idea what I was doing. The 400ci engine that I put in it, with 4bbl carb and headers as well as removed emissions controls, was probably close to 200hp.

bob and john
> hethoughtofcars
03/30/2014 at 18:37 | 1 |
the saab is a bit of a story. it was my dads DD for a number of year, but it started to get heavy on the fuel bills. so, for his 20th aniverssery, mom bought thin a brand new MY2010 Audi A3 TDI. i was 15 at the time, so the car went to a friends farm to sit. we never had a means of storing it (1 garage filled with bikes and motorcycles) and a 2 car driveway, and by-laws state we cant keep our car on the grass iin front of our house. so, the car sits. it was running and driving perfectly fine when we parked it.
every couple of months we would go and give it and crank over, just to make sure it still ran. always fired up. however, sitting for so long, the brakes are gone, the suspension need to be redone, and when we parked it, it WAS leaking some oil from somewhere.
thus, it sits. its got 200,000km ON THE DOT and a lot of history. we think it would take something like 3-4 grand to fix it. i could go on kijiji and buy another one for 3500 thts running and driving with way less km. the interior is still good, and the body was relatively rust free last i remember. so its kinda in libido.
I dont have the money to get it street legal, but it was a DAM good car back when we were using it and i dont really wanna let go.
as of right now, me and some friends are debating stripping it and going lemons racing with it or w/e the Canadian equivalent is.
might consider getting the parts and working on it myself and make my moving to and from school car (school in thunder bay, home in toronto)
O- 60 on the sv is about 3.5 seconds.

You are correct, it came with 350 stock, but it's not stock now. Also my Cobalt had 205 stock (which was underrated based on the numbers I got from having it on the dyno), but I estimated the BHP of them as I've owned them.
The GTO is my favorite car I've owned. It shows, I've had it 4x longer than any other car I've had. And yes, the GTO and the Z28 are the 6 speeds. It kind of irks me to have an automatic in my list, haha.

I'm at the other end of the spectrum, I've owned 30-40 cars I think... average would be something like 100 HP :P But then again, average weight would be less than a metric ton.. so :P

I don't think he has bought any of them brand new. I know he has talked about how one of the most expensive cars he has owned is the Cadillac.
Pretty much, just go to eBay and see the price difference between a 2001 Porsche Turbo with 60K miles and a 2002 Porsche w/ 70K miles. You may be talking about $5k or less.

The Corolla was sold with a 1.6L engine that made three different outputs: 74, 90, and 110. I know mine had to be the 74 horsepower one because I bought this from my dad, and whenever he would buy cars, he would buy the "stripper" model (He has actually said that power windows 'are just one more thing that can break' on multiple occasions). Ours didn't even come with a radio, much less A/C. Later I would be shocked to find it still used a carburetor!
So, yeah, a Corolla could be faster than a Tempo. I have no idea which one would be less sporty though. :)

Nice. How are you liking the FR-S? I would love for that to be my next car, but when we went to the auto show, it turned out my six year old wouldn't fit in the backseat (because he has legs). He's probably just going to keep getting bigger, too... *sigh*

I remember when I first saw a picture of the first gen Aurora (in Consumer Reports of all places). I thought it was the best looking, most futuristic looking car ever! Even though it hasn't necessarily aged well, I still have a soft spot for it.

Though the bloody Tercel is unlikely to have even half that hp, as it had major carburetor issues and is responsible for permanently turning me off wagons of any type.
